Title: Preparing Your Child for Their First Day of Preschool

By New Discoveries Preschool, Tucson, AZ

The first day of preschool is an exciting milestone—for both children and parents! At New Discoveries Preschool, we know this big transition can feel a little overwhelming. The good news? With a bit of preparation, you can help your child feel confident, happy, and ready to learn from day one.

Here are some tips to make that first day a success:

1. Talk About It Early and Often

Start conversations about preschool a few weeks before the big day. Read books about starting school, look at photos of classrooms, and talk about all the fun things your child will do—like painting, playing with friends, and learning new songs.

2. Visit the School Together

If possible, schedule a tour before your child’s first day. Meeting the teachers and seeing the classroom helps make the environment feel familiar and less intimidating.

3. Practice Your Routine

A week or two before school starts, try following your morning routine—waking up at the same time, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and packing a backpack. This makes the first morning feel natural instead of rushed.

4. Pack Comfort Items

A small stuffed animal, family photo, or blanket can help your child feel secure during the day. Just make sure it’s something that can be kept in a cubby or backpack when not in use.

5. Keep Goodbyes Short and Sweet

It’s natural for both you and your child to feel emotional, but long goodbyes can make separation harder. Give a hug, share a cheerful goodbye, and let your child know you’ll be back after school.

Parent Tip:

Create a “first day countdown” using stickers or a simple calendar. Each day, your child can mark off one square until the big day arrives—this builds excitement and helps them feel prepared.
